LONDON: It is Kyiv Day today in Ukraine. A celebration in the honour of the capital city that is observed every year on the last weekend of May.

Today, Sunday 31st May 2020, marks the beginning of the festivities, which celebrate the history, heritage and birth day of the city.

The Mayor of Kyiv Vitaly Klitschko joined by Arnold Schwarzenegger in a video posted on Klitschko’s YouTube channel congratulated the residents of the city and the famous song ‘Yak tebe ne lyubyty, Kyieve miy (How can I not love you, my Kyiv).

The Kyiv Day celebrations take place during the spring season when the weather is perfect for outdoor music festivals, street markets, street performers and amazing street food.

The central streets of Khreschatyk, Maidan Nezalezhnosti and Andriyivsky are probably the most important venues to enjoy the festivities of the day.

This year’s celebrations will be unique and unlike previous years as it would be held under lock down restrictions due to Covid-19 but the spirits of the people remain high.
